Becoming You

WHO ARE YOU?

When we are born, we're given a name perhaps by our parents. Some of us have been given names in honor of loved ones past or present or maybe even in honor of a special place or object of affection. However, during childhood, titles get tagged to our identity. Remember phrases like "that's our little baker. She loves to be in the kitchen helping me bake"? We were destined to be doctors, scientist, reporters in all sorts of professions just because we showed the slightest interest in something. As silly as this may sound, many of us have spent hours working towards or working in professions trying to live up to the expectations placed, forced even, on us. Some of us have found joy in our professions and some of us are just collecting a paycheck. I'm not here to speak on either. What I am here to do is shine a light on who you really are. I am not asking what you do for a living, but rather who you are when you're not working. Do you realize that there are millions of people struggling with identity? We can feel so out of place that we begin to create our own place, a safe place where we can create our own identity. Do you know how much pressure that is? Especially when we already have an identity, not just a name but an identity. All we have to do is accept it and walk in it. My pastor used to begin all of his sermons by having the congregation hold up their Bibles and repeat these phrases: "I am what The Word says I am. I can do what The Word says I can do and I can be what The Word says I can be...".

So let's take a look at The Word of God. In Ephesians 2:10, it says "We are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works". Matthew 5:13 says "You are the salt of the earth". Romans 8:37 says that I am more than a conqueror and

2 Corinthians 5:21 says"...we are the righteousness of God." This is just to list a few places in God's Word that our identity in Christ is clear. Some times our professions call for us to be one way at work that is different from how we are with our family and friends. Good news is that our identity is rooted in our Creator. Our real job is to look like, act like, and be like who He has already created us to be. Even better news is that we don't have to strive to do this. He has placed His Spirit in us to help us walk this identity out on a daily basis if we surrender to it.

Who are you? Who are you reflecting when you look in the mirror? Who do you want to reflect?
